LIVIGNO was an enclave in the upper Valtellina nestled in a long valley at an altitude of 1700 meters located in the Italian territory between Valtellina and Engadina. Formerly isolated in the winter months, for some decades Livigno has been connected by an easy road that crosses the Eira and Foscagno passes to reach Valdidentro and Bormio. Livigno has two other connections: the tunnel towards Zernez (always open alternately) and the Forcola pass (closed in winter) which leads to the Bernina pass. Tourism in
Livigno and
Trepalle has seen a rapid and impetuous development flourish centered on
Skiing and
Cycling (see Guides), but also thanks to the duty-free area that encourages
Shopping. At the end of the 19th century, Livigno offered summer holidays in cheerful solitude but today that solitude has given way to a
tranquility that is mixed with a healthy
worldliness. (
